We Are Number 1. (ish)
Real Relationship Advice
I’m a smart woman. I am one of those snobs that push for more knowledge and value a higher education. I respect those individuals who have committed to earning a degree and put in the long hours and sleepless nights. I never say, ‘I don’t understand’ or ‘I am confused’ because I will work tirelessly to research the subject matter until I do. So, when I say that I am confused it is a rare event and I am probably holding the sides of my head so my head does not explode.
This is what I do not understand:
a. If you are pro-life you believe in the sanctity of every life except, of course, if you break the law and then you get an express pass to hell (death penalty).
b. If you are pro-life you tend to be against pre-natal services (Planned Parenthood), pre-school (Public School Funding), day care or essentially any legislation that would give a child a head start or food or healthcare.
c. Essentially if you are pro-life, you do not believe in evolution which is amazing since you do believe in the Social Darwinian concept of ‘survival of the fittest’ (see b.).
d. If you believe that Obamacare is socialist, it is an imposition on your rights because it takes away your choice, you usually have no problem being against a woman’s choice to govern her body as she sees fit.
e. If you believe that the use of stem cells is an abomination, you are usually against assisted suicide of individuals who would have probably benefitted from stem cell therapy.
f. If you are against abortion and see it as murder, you are against planned parenthood that would have given pre-natal care and/or birth control to the same women you are forcing to have the baby.
g. If you are Pro-life you are usually Anti-federal aid for the poor who are made up mainly of children.
h. If you use the Bible to justify that a man should not lay with a man (Leviticus 18:22), why don’t you believe in Love thy neighbor as yourself (Mark12:31) or feed the poor (Matthew 25:35, Isaiah 58:10, Proverbs 28:27, Luke 3:11) for “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” (Proverbs 14:31).
i. Pro-life doesn’t translate to making sure that everyone has a good life.
j. If you are Pro-life, you assume that Pro-choice people are pro-abortion and not just individuals who believe that a person’s privacy and choice is their own decision (sounds down-right un-American!)
k. If you are anti-immigration, you argue that immigrants don’t pay their fair share or take jobs away from real Americans. But if you are a person of color (defined as anyone who is not Caucasian with no discernible Euro-centric ethnicity) who is a naturalized citizen (or descendant of a non-white), your level of American-ness is not like being a white American.
l. If you believe that the President is not American born, why become President when a bomb does more damage to the American Psyche?
I see things in a certain way. I see the country as the identified patient and it is my professional opinion that we are damaged. I believe that 9/11 was not just a profound shock to the system but an excuse to allow our subconscious paranoia to run amok. I believe that we see danger around every corner and certain people see the wrath of God vividly because they have the most sins to atone for.
We can pretend that what is happening is a political movement or we can see it for what it is: an immature society that believes in extremism to protect us from the outside evil. What we can’t see is that the evil is already here and it is the once subversive, subconscious racism, bigotry and xenophobia that has been allowed into the light with little to no reprisal. We lived too long on the fringe of the world saying we were the best. 9/11 showed us we were vulnerable and that does not fit with our ‘We are Number 1’ paradigm. So help me understand how denying abortion, equal marriage and immigration is going to make us Number 1 again?
