The fourth of July is a date that is celebrated by the United States to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  The Declaration of Independence, unlike the Constitution, was a letter written to the British saying, ‘Back off, buddy. You are infringing on my rights.’ The following is the beginning of the Declaration:

“When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The rest goes on to explain how they felt that the Brits were mean to them and didn’t give them due process and treat them as equals and even going so far as to obstruct the naturalization of foreigners. You can imagine the horror of living during these times unless, of course, you are a minority as in gay, foreign, a person of color or a woman.

You see what chaps our asses is that the same people who wrap themselves in the flag and say stupid epithets like ‘don’t tread on me’ and join militias because the Constitution gave them the right to bear arms and they need to protect themselves from hostiles like natives or wild animals like free range ligers, are the same ones who bastardize the spirit the country was founded on. They are the first ones to try to dam up any immigration because immigrants are foreigners and we are the most xenophobic country in the world. They are the first to try to limit the rights of others such as a woman’s right to choose because, you know, we are too stupid to make our own decisions. They are the first to invoke God and religion as to how “normal” is supposed to be even though the Constitution clearly states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” In other words, no religion gets to make our laws (in case you didn’t quite understand that piece of well written verbiage.)

As the child of immigrants I understand what this country was founded on because my parents fled tyranny. My parents fled oppression. My parents fled threat to life for thinking differently. I have seen how this hurt them. Their homeland just 90 miles off the coast of this country and it may as well have been on the moon. They could never take us to where they met or grew up or the church where they married. So don’t talk to me about the good old days or how you want America for Americans because I am an American and you have no interest in my America; an America where all are treated equally regardless of race, creed, color, gender or sexuality, an America where we do not practice a government enforced social Darwinism and actually care for those in need and not consider it a handout but our duty as human beings, an America where education is cherished, health is an inalienable right and love between two adults is lauded.

Yeah, that’s my America. Apparently, I am really a Canadian.
