50 Things I have learned in 50 years – Day 23

There is less than a month until I turn 50. I have been sharing some of the things I have learned over the years the last 20 days (#50until50) and have been surprised with some of them. Why is my list better than someone else’s? Why do I think the lessons I have learned are better than others? Honest answer? I don’t. I am just happy that I have not stayed stagnant and I have committed myself to a well examined life.

I know you’re thinking, ‘What else could you have learned?’ Which brings me to #23

Faith in God above all…..how about we start with faith in yourself.

Look, I know this is a bit on the spiritual side but I would be lying if I got through this whole list without mentioning my spirituality. As I have grown, so has my spiritual side.

I have said before, I was raised Catholic. I went to Catholic schools all through my childhood and early adulthood. I have received every sacrament except Holy Orders. My spirituality was not molded in school or church. It was grown from my mind and reason. With that said, my lesson is one that we can all get around.

If you don’t believe in God….have faith in yourself and your abilities and worry will disappear.

If you believe in a God …..have faith in yourself and your immortal soul and worry will disappear.

My lesson in this was when I realized that anxiety is a lack of trust in yourself. When I learned to trust myself, I didn’t need to worry any longer. Now, you can say that I tapped into my inner knowing and that part of me that is part of something bigger brings me peace. Or you can say, I finally understood how awesome I am and I trust that. Whichever one works for you, do it.

Come back for the next 27 days and see what else I have learned.
