The Purple Purse Challenge
Lee and I have made no bones about the culture of rape and abuse in our society. We have both worked in the domestic violence realm. Lee has had clients from both sides of the fence, victims and perpetrators. We do not vilify anyone but advocate breaking the cycle of abuse. When the people from the Allstate Foundation asked us to talk about their Purple Purse campaign, we said absolutely.
One out of four people experience domestic violence. One of the major components of domestic violence is financial control. By establishing an environment where one spouse has total control of all of the money, the other spouse has no resources from which to leave the abusive relationship. The Allstate Foundation is working hard to build the financial empowerment of domestic violence survivors.
The Challenge brings together charitable organizations that work with domestic violence with the charities that earn the most winning prize money. Emmy nominated actress Kerry Washington has lent her voice to the cause as the Purple Purse ambassador. You can get involved, find a charity, and make a donation by clicking here. They have a huge amount of information so take a look at some of these videos:
Most importantly, if you or someone you know is experiencing violence or abuse in their home, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224.
