Pope pushes for abstinence (because he’s ugly)

Welcome to the Celebrity Smackdown! This week we are expanding the traditional definition of celebrity. This guy has not made any films that mainstream America would watch or written any books that your avid reader would read unless they were forced to. However, this man is photographed thousands of times a day and has a whole media enterprise at his finger tips. Millions, if not a billion, of people listen to him (kind of) and you had better kiss his ring when you visit him.

Cave Paintings and Grunting

We spend lots of time in this world trying to define and categorize things. In fact, that’s all the Men are from Mars blah blah was about. The reality is that at the core, men and women want the same things in life. We may define and approach them differently, but ultimately we all want to love and be loved. Since we all want to get to the same place, let’s all do this together. But to create a healthy relationship, we should have some idea of how our differences may create some problems. This is all a nice way of saying ‘Occasionally he/she does some really stupid shit and I can’t understand why but I know he/she loves me.’

No Esteem. No Bra. No Problem.

Yesterdays post, coupled with a very nice afternoon together, got us talking and thinking about the experience I mentioned. We thought it very interesting that we started with disparate interpretations but ultimately ended up in the same place. Since Paul promised to continue his insights to the experience, we figured we would continue the talk today. We know we are supposed to be answering reader questions so here is the question that we asked ourselves: You mentioned that a few weeks after you were married Paul asked Lee to go to dinner without wearing a bra? Why was that incident so memorable?

Addicted to Love

We have been married for 20 years. To clarify though, these have been good years, not ‘I’m staying with you because of the kids or I’m afraid I will be alone’ years. We are happy. We are the couple that makes people sick. We hold hands and will engage in public displays of affection on any given grocery run. This is one of the reasons we started this blog in the first place. Somehow or another, we have avoided the common traps and pitfalls that most couples succumb to. Sure we were incredibly naïve when we married but we were smart enough to know we didn’t know everything.

And the Oscar for best public vomiting goes to…

If you haven’t noticed by now, this week we have been talking about addiction. Now this subject is so rich that we could literally write about it everyday for years and not repeat ourselves. One of the best Petri dishes in the in vivo experiment we call life for addictions are celebrities. Apparently, when you mix artistry with sycophants and self-entitlement, you win a one way ticket to rehab. This week’s Celebrity Smackdown is those individuals who take their addictions as part of being in the limelight. The same assholes who cash their fat check, sign autographs and sell memorabilia and insist they are not role models.

I’m addicted to you. You’re addicted to me. We’re just one big addicted family.

Addictions. We use this word like a punch line, as if one addiction is better than another. As a parent, we need to be very aware that addiction has a very specific genetic component which, combined with socialization with your child, can create uber-addicts (pardon the lack of umlauts) with an addiction with the strength of an e-bola virus. Don’t fool yourself, your kids see what you’re doing and those little vices you have will have a vice grip on your kids in the future.

I love you, and you, and you, and you.

One of our secret pleasures is watching Sober House or Celebrity Rehab. We think that Dr. Drew is a great guy and the nay sayers can suck it. Dr. Pinsky is showing the reality of rehab. Now granted, most rehab facilities aren’t that nice but the drama, process and insight are still very realistic. We can joke all we want to about the over indulgent celebrity and the lack of willpower from the spoiled babies of the world but the reality is addiction is as common as blinking and to deny it is just more symptom of an addiction.
