Dulce De Leche

I may have been born in Los Angeles but my home was Cuban. Every night we had white rice with some form of meat. Bananas either came in green, dark brown or yellow where 2 of them were fried up for a savory or sweet side dish. Treats in our family were usually flans or a shake made with tropical fruits that my classmates had never heard of. Sundays always meant that my Dad would break out the blender and make shakes. Our favorites were usually mamey or trigo. These wonderful memories with my family were also what set us apart from everyone. So, when McDonald’s comes out with a Dulce de Leche Milk Shake, I had to make sure that they got it right.

Happy Dulce De Leche ChildrenFor my Anglo friends, Dulce de Leche is a roughly translated to ‘candied milk’ Hispanics like sweet things and Dulce de Leche is a great example of taking something good and making it better. For the uninitiate, Dulce de Leche is the carmelized version of sweetened condensed milk.  It is a rich, sweet and delicious confection. In a shake, Dulce de Leche takes a yummy vanilla shake and a depth of flavor that can never hope of getting on its own.

McDonald’s Dulce de Leche Shake does not disappoint. It is thick, rich and tastes like heaven. It tastes like the sweet memories of my youth. The kids loved it and I explained to them that this was a flavor that their grandparents would adore. In fact, I called my brother in Miami and sent him out to buy a couple for our parents and, yes, they loved them too. What I love about the McCafe Dulce de Leche Shake is not just the flavor but that I can share it with everyone.

I remember celebrating my last day on Kindergarten with a trip to the ice cream shoppe! Related, my daughter asked for an iPad for hers. – Nicole Ibarrondo

We all go to our family river land on the 4th of July.  When I was a little girl, one of my dad’s friends would bury a watermelon in the sand along the beach.  We would hunt for that watermelon every 4th, and find a nice big juicy, sweet watermelon buried in the sand along the water.  For years I thought that’s where watermelons grew, along the river bed in the sand!

I love going to the beach every summer with my neighbors.
