50 Things I have learned in 50 years – Day 34
There is less than a month until I turn 50. As we enter December and my 50th birthday looms like the shiny lights all over my house, I feel even more compelled to share what I have learned. Sure, some lessons have been better than others but lessons learned nonetheless.
I know you’re thinking, ‘Did you learn anything about love and stuff?’ Which brings me to #34
Be better than that.
Continuing on yesterday’s lesson, I learned this lesson years ago when I saw Steven King’s “The Green Mile”. For some reason, that movie stirred in me something that unhinged me. I came out of that theater in tears and kept crying for hours. I felt, for lack of better words, convicted and exposed. I finally understood the Dalai Lama’s saying of “An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind”. I would now react like I am better than that.
Ultimately, I sleep better knowing that, even though my fiery personality reacts with a desire to rampage, I remember to be better than that. I will not let someone’s actions decide mine. I am better than that. I do not need to resort to violence or cruelty. I cannot create peace if I am always at war. I am better than that and so are you.
Come back for the next 16 days and see what else I have learned.
