Tacos 300x146 Chilis Fresh Menu

If there is anything that a mother appreciates on a Wednesday night it’s a trip to restaurant. It’s a nice break in the week from cooking and the family routine, especially now at the end of the school year when everyone is a little antsy. We figured we would take advantage of Chili’s generosity and also celebrate our daughter’s completion of her AP exams and SAT. Just the mention of going to Chili’s had everyone excited.

We went early enough to avoid the rush and were seated immediately. Our server seemed a little less than enthusiastic. Quite frankly, he seemed like he had been taking a nap. We asked him directly about the new freshly prepared items in the menu and he looked at us with vacant eyes, not unlike that of someone who has been bitten by a zombie.  Nevertheless, we were there and we would carry on.

We noted the new menu which seems very BBQ heavy for Lee’s taste. But there were plenty of other tasty things to choose from. Paul chose Steakhouse Sandwich, which is sliced sirloin with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, arugula, melted provolone and horseradish cream on warm flatbread. One word: YUMMY. The steak was tender and the veggies were grilled to caramelized perfection. It could have been a little horseradishier for us but it was very tasty.

Lee ordered the Crispy Shrimp Tacos. The menu said the plate should have had Crispy Shrimp, spicy coleslaw and tequila lime sauce. The truth was that the shrimp were tough and the tortillas were stale. You know how a tortilla gets if you leave it out for a while? The coleslaw also had no flavor other than cabbage. The entire flavor combo was disappointing at best. We are strongly hoping that this was an off day because we would love to taste the dish as it was intended. Instead, we did what we hardly ever do, we sent it back.

Instead, Lee ended up with a bowl of the Chicken Enchilada Soup like Jeannie. In fact, Jeannie sat and said ‘I know what I want!’ before even opening a menu. The soup was WONDERFUL! The base was well spiced with a little zing and the chicken was very tender. Also, the soup was very filling and left Lee sated after the unsatisfactory taco.

The kids menu remains the same with the regular fair from grilled cheese to Kraft Mac and Cheese. The French fries were a hit with all three kids who devoured every fry on the table. We had some money left over so we will return later in the week without the kids to order a couple of margaritas.

One other thing: Chili’s has a cool new promotion where you can upload a video and tell them why you do not want to cook tonight. It puts you into a drawing and you could win a $50 gift card to Chili’s. Take a look here.

Disclosure: Chili’s gave us a $50.00 gift card to check out their new menu. The views expressed on CoupleDumb are ours and are not influenced by gift cards or other niceties.
